1969 was Gary Neibauer's rookie year and his best year in a short and mediocre major league career. In 1972 the Braves traded him and Jim Nash to the Phils for Joe Hoerner (on the downside of a great career) and minor leaguer Andre Thornton. He is no relation to Rienhold Niebuhr, father of Christian Realism and author of "The Nature and Destiny of Man." He is also credited with the prayer "Father, give us courage to change what must be altered, serenity to accept what cannot be helped, and the insight to know the one from the other" (again, this is Niebuhr, not the nearly homophonic Neibauer). Although, I prefer Calivin's version
“The strength to change what I can, the inability to accept what I can’t, and the incapacity to tell the difference.”
