Thanks, everybody (including the jokers). My team was fielding, so the outcome was fine with me in any case. About 5 minutes after posting it occurred to me that the ball hit the runner on first (the clue should've been immediate: it was a grounder toward first). OTOH, these games take place inside computers, so it's also possible a subatomic particle interacted with the guy on first, leading to a paradox involving Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle wherein the runner's speed could be determined but not his position, and he was called out for running outside the basepath.
