[b:e812917887]SEASON #9 RECAP[/b:e812917887][/size:e812917887]

The record for most runs batted in was shattered, a champion was dethroned, a shortstop saved the game of his life for the World Series, and an underdog romped through the playoffs in an unforgettable season 6.

The Eastern Division was a battle between two juggernauts, as the Yankees battled the Expansion club to a flat-footed tie, with the defending champion Yankees winning the division by a tie-breaker. The Yankees got excellent pitching from Ron Guidry(21-14, 4.01 ERA) and Jack Chesbro(25-12, 3.99 ERA), but the calling card for Season 9’s version of the Bronx Bombers was offense. Mickey Mantle was the league MVP, yet he did not lead his TEAM in any major offensive category. Mantle’s 63 home runs were bested by Roger Maris(77 HR, 146 RBI), his 143 RBI were surpassed by Babe Ruth’s 159 RBI (66 HR, 160 Runs scored), and Lou Gehrig(.330, 48 HR, 151 RBI) led the team in batting average. The Expansion team’s pitching staff set an all but unbreakable record of 1373 strikeouts, with all four starters eclipsing the 300 K mark. Steve Carlton(24-16, 308 K), Mike Scott(20-19, 364 K), Tom Seaver(22-15, 309 K), and JR Richard(19-14, 321 K) produces most of the whiffs. Dick Allen(55 HR, 152 RBI), Robin Yount(33 HR, 120 RBI), and Cesar Cedeno(28 HR, 110 RBI) paced a strong offense for Charlie Manuel’s club. The Giants had a competitive club, but had the misfortune of playing in the East. Cy Young Award winner Christy Mathewson(26-13, 3.31 ERA) teamed with his usual sidekick, Joe McGinnity(24-12)) to provide solid pitching, and Willie Mays(69 HR, 125 RBI), Barry Bonds(58 HR, 126 RBI), Mel Ott(46 HR, 111 RBI), and Tom Haller(57 HR, 116 RBI) poured on the offense for the Giants. The last-place Braves got good performances from Greg Maddux(21-16, league-leading 3.27 ERA), Eddie Mathews(55 HR, 129 RBI) and Hank Aaron(33 HR, 129 RBI).

The Central division saw the Dodgers hold off a game Pirates club to win that playoff spot. The Dodgers saw Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale each win 20 games, while Roy Campanella(53 HR, 121 RBI), Duke Snider(43 HR, 110 RBI), and Pedro Guerrero(47 HR, 102 RBI) slugged their way through the Central. The Pirates were led by Babe Adams(21-8, 3.46 ERA), who produced Cy-worthy pitching statistics, closer Johnny Miljus(32 saves), Honus Wagner(.334, 21 HR, 105 RBI), Willie Stargell(53 HR, 111 RBI), and Ralph Kiner(60 HR, 139 RBI). The Beltway Boys and A’s both struggled greatly. The Beltway Boys produced 3 20-game losers(Walter Johnson, Jim Palmer, and Doc Ayers), though Cal Ripken(38 HR, 109 RBI), Frank Robinson(38 HR, 120 RBI), and Dave Winfield(47 HR, 130 RBI) provided a measure of revenge for their pitching brethren. The A’s could not overcome an anemic offense, which was hampered by playing one season in Olympic Stadium.

The Red Sox won the West, pulling away from the Cardinals when the Redbirds lost their last 6 games of the season. Cy Young(20-19), Roger Clemens(21-17), and Bill Dinneen(20-16) started and Dick Radatz(32 saves) finished games for the Sox. Tris Speaker(.359, 130 runs, 55 doubles), Ted Williams(.334, 28 HR, 119 RBI), Carl Yastrzemski(40 HR, 112 RBI), Rico Petrocelli(44 HR, 156 RBI), and Wade Boggs(33 HR, 103 RBI, 150 runs) provided the punch for the Red Sox. The Cardinals were paced by four sluggers: Rogers Hornsby(40 HR, 119 RBI), Stan Musial(36 HR, 120 RBI), Mark McGwire(55 HR, 123 RBI), and Johnny Mize(41 HR, 121 RBI); and two pitchers: Pete Alexander(24-12, 4.00 ERA) and Barney Schultz(40 saves). Hank Greenberg of the Tigers obliterated the RBI season record with 198, while bashing 58 home runs and batting .302. Ty Cobb won his sixth batting title with a total of .371, though the Tigers finished 2 games under .500. The Cubs were led by Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks(38 HR, 121 RBI), and Mr. Tub, the “stocky” Hack Wilson(60 HR, 154 RBI).

The Semi-Finals saw a resumption of a bitter rivalry, as the underdog Red Sox faced the defending three-time champion Yankees. Game 1 followed the script perfectly, as Ron Guidry shut out the Red Sox 7-0, while Mickey Mantle slugged two home runs, with Joe DiMaggio and Roger Maris each hitting one big fly. Game 2 saw the Red Sox quiet the critics and the Yankee bats, as Roger Clemens beat the Bombers 7-1 on 4 hits. Game 3 saw the Red Sox bring the lumber to Fenway Park. Wade Boggs had 4 hits and homered, and teammates Tris Speaker, Carlton Fisk, Rico Petrocelli, and Carl Yastrzemski joined him in the home run column. Bill Dinneen got the 13-6 win, as the Sox chased Yankee starter Jack Chesbro after 3 innings. Game 4 saw the Fenway Faithful come to the ballpark hoping to see their underdog Red Sox eliminate the hated Yankees from the postseason, and the Sox did not disappoint. Tex Hughson threw a 6 hit shutout as Yastrzemski had 3 hits and Bobby Doerr homered.

The other Semi-Final pitted the Expansion squad against the Dodgers. Expansion wasted no time in blowing the Dodgers and their ace starters Koufax and Drysdale away in the first two games. Expansion won the Game 1 14-4, with Steve Carlton getting the win and Dick Allen and Gary Carter both homering a driving in 4 apiece. Unbelievably, Game 2 was worse for the Bums, as Allen homered and knocked in 3 runs and Cesar Cedeno homered and drove in 5, giving the Expansion club a 17-5 win. Dazzy Vance calmed things down for the Dodgers in Game 3, striking out 12 Expansion batters en route to a 7-4 victory. Game 4 saw Roy Campanella start things out right for the Dodgers, as he hit a grand slam in the top of the 3rd inning. The Dodgers and their pitching staff held onto that lead, despite an Expansion rally, to win 8-7. Game 5 moved back to Ebbets Field. Steve Carlton dominated the Dodger batters, giving up only 4 hits, and George Brett and Robin Yount ech drove in 2 runs to send the Expansion squad to its second straight World Series.

Game 1 of the World Series began at Fenway Park. Mike Scott opposed Cy Young, but pitching was not the story in this contest. The Expansion team jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st, and Rico Petrocelli answered with a solo shot in the 2nd. Dick Allen homered for Expansion in the top of the 5th, but the Dwight Evans blasted a two-run homer over the Green Monster to tie the game at 3. Expansion manufactured 3 runs in the 7th, while the sox could only muster 1 on Evans’ second homer of the game. Expansion tacked on one more in the top of the 8th, but the Splendid Splinter exploded for the Sox in the bottom of the 8th. Ted Williams hit a two-run homer, followed by a solo shot from Carlton Fisk to tie the game at 7. Young allowed Robert Alomar to single in the 9th, and Alomar promptly stole second. With 2 outs, Bob Boone singled to center, but Tris Speaker fired a laser to Fisk, who tagged Alomar out in his bid to score the go-ahead run. In the 9th Boggs singled, then Speaker singled, moving Boggs to third. Eighth inning hero Ted Williams strode to the plate and singled to right, leading the Sox to an 8-7 win.
Game 2 was another slugfest. Carlton Fisk smacked 2 home runs and knocked in 4 and Ted Williams went 3-4, as Roger Clemens and the Red Sox won 9-7. The series moved to Shea Stadium, the home of the prohibitive favorite Expansion team. Bill Dinneen didn’t last through the first inning, and Robin Yount set a World Series record with 4 home runs and 12 RBI, as the Expansion club totally destroyed the Red Sox 23-5. Cesar Cedeno homered with 4 RBI, and George Brett hit a grand slam, but the story of the day was Yount. The shortstop punished the Red Sox with his bat. He electrified the crowd with a grand slam in the 1st inning, smacked a three-run homer in the 2nd inning,
cracked a two-run shot in the 3rd inning and lofted a three-run blast in the 7th inning.
A beating like the Red Sox received should have decimated their confidence, but the Sox were not negative heading into Game 4. They turned to Yankee-killer Tex Hughson, who “expanded” his game, allowing 6 hits in a 5-1 victory that placed the Red Sox on the precipice of a world’s championship. Ted Williams homered again, and Tris Speaker drove in 3 runs with 2 doubles. Determined to stop the Expansion squad from getting their offensive game going in Game 5, the Red Sox exploded for 5 runs in the first inning. Speaker laid down a bunt single, then Mike Scott walked Williams, Petrocelli, and Yastrzemski, walking in a run. Carlton Fisk then struck a mortal blow to the Expansion squad’s psyche, hitting a long fly down the left field line. Fisk waved the ball fair, and the Red Sox were staked to a 5-0 lead. In the 2nd, Boggs and Speaker slapped back-to-back triples and Williams knocked in Speaker with a single, giving the Sox a 7-0 lead. The Expansion fans grew quiet, but gained a measure of confidence with Dick Allen’s 3-run homer in the 3rd inning. The Red Sox scored again in the 6th, and Allen drove in another run in the 8th, making the score 8-4 after 8 full innings. The Red Sox sent starter Cy Young back out to start the 9th, and he struck out Cesar Cedeno. George Brett singled to center, then Roberto Alomar singled to right. Game 3 hero Robin Yount moved toward the plate, and the Expansion fans cheered their champion on, hoping to ignite a rally. Yount worked a full count before hitting a smash down the third base line. Wade Boggs back-handed the ball, fired to Bobby Doerr, who effortlessly made the turn. When the ball nestled into Rudy York’s mitt the Expansion crowd went silent, and they were forced to hear the shouts of victory emanating from their infield, as the underdog Red Sox celebrated their first championship. Ted Williams put it best when he said, “No matter what else we do, this team will always go down as the greatest team in Red Sox history. We did it for the old folks in Presque Isle, Maine, and White River Junction, Vermont. We did it for the baby boomers in North Conway, New Hampshire, and Groton, Massachussetts. We did it for the kids in Central Falls, Rhode Island, and Putnam, Connecticut. We had to exorcise the ghosts, and it started with beating Ruth and the Yankees. And now, when we walk down the street, people will say, “There go the World Champion Boston Red Sox.”

[b:2a051397c0]SEASON #10 RECAP[/b:2a051397c0][/size:2a051397c0]

Two bitter rivals met for a classic 7-game World Series in Season #10, completing a very competitive regular season.

The Eastern Division was a three-team battle for most of the season, before the Cubs and their dominant big 3 pitchers, Pete Alexander, Three-Finger Brown, and Jack Pfiester pulled away from the Red Sox and the Pirates. Alexander won the Cy Young Award with a 23-11 record, a 3.44 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, and 212 strikeouts. Pfiester (20-14, 3.29 ERA) and Brown (21-11, 3.72 ERA) made sure there was no drop-off after Pete, and Bruce Sutter won the Fireman of the Year, amassing 42 saves. The Cubs offense was paced by right-handed power in the form of potent lineup, led by Hack Wilson(53 HR, 120 RBI), Ryne Sandberg (52 HR, 125 RBI), Ernie Banks (46 HR, 111 RBI), and Gabby Hartnett (34 HR, 98 RBI). The Red Sox actually led the division for much of the season, stoked by 3 fine pitchers in their own right: Roger Clemens (22-12), Cy Young (22-12), and Bill Dinneen (22-14). Ted Williams once again provided Red Sox fans with a season-long batting clinic, batting .328 with a .465 OBP, 33 HR, 104 RBI, and 140 runs scored. Carl Yastrzemski (46 HR, 113 RBI), Rico Petrocelli (51 HR, 136 RBI), and Rudy York (41 HR, 128 RBI) provided plenty of offensive punch as well. The Pirates went as far as the 2-man punch of Babe Adams (24-6, league-leading 2.64 ERA) and Ralph Kiner (59 HR, 147 RBI) could take them, but fell out of contention in the last week of the season. The Braves never could get any traction, though Greg Maddux (20-18, 3.70 ERA) and Hank Aaron (33 HR, 134 RBI, .304 AVG) had fine seasons.

The Central Division saw the Cardinals and the Yankees meet in the next-to-last series of the season in a flat-footed tie. The Cards has been led all season by Rogers Hornsby (league-leading .355 AVG, 40 HR, 136 RBI, 146 Runs), Mark McGwire (60 HR, 133 RBI), Johnny Mize (46 HR, 144 RBI), and Stan Musial (36 HR, 116 RBI, while Bob Gibson (25-14, 3.80 ERA), Mort Cooper (22-12), and Barney Schultz (42 Saves) gave the Cardinals solid mound-work. MVP Lou Gehrig, who led the league in Home Runs with 62 and RBI with 191, paced the Yankees. Babe Ruth (59 HR, 132 RBI), Mickey Mantle (48 HR, 110 RBI), and Roger Maris (62 HR, 138 RBI) all enjoyed the short right field porch in Yankee Stadium, and Jack Chesbro (25-12) and Ron Guidry (22-14) each won 20 games. In the first game, Gehrig and Maris each hit two home runs, but it wasn’t nearly enough, as the Cardinals hit 8 homeruns, led by Jack Clark, who hit three home runs and plated 10 Redbird runs en route to a 21-12 Cardinal victory. Game two saw Mort Cooper fire a three hit shutout, giving the Cardinals a two game lead, which they maintained to win the Central, while the Yankees were the Wild Card representative. The Expansion squad had a good season, winning 86 games. Mike Schmidt (47 HR, 125 RBI), Cesar Cedeno (21 HR, 88 RBI, .323 AVG) , and Gary Carter (49 HR, 119 RBI) were the main cogs in the Expansion machine. The White Sox were never really in the race, though Dick Allen (44 HR, 102 RBI), Frank Thomas (43 HR, 117 RBI), and Luke Appling (.330 AVG) had good offensive seasons.

The A’s were fortunate to play in the West, where an 82-80 record was still enough to win the division by ten games. Chief Bender (20-12) won 20 games, and Jimmie Foxx 53 HR, 137 RBI), Al Simmons (27 HR, 119 RBI, .324 AVG), Reggie Jackson (43 HR, 126 RBI), and Jose Canseco (34 HR, 108 RBI) provided the firepower. Walter Johnson produced some great pitching stats, with a 3.70 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP, but the Beltway team could not produce enough offense to win games. Cal Ripken (35 HR, 100 RBI) and Goose Goslin (23 HR, 113 RBI) were two bright spots in the season for the Beltway team. The Giants were led by Christy Mathewson (21-15) on the mound, and the father-son combination of Bobby (42 HR, 106 RBI) and Barry Bonds (56 HR, 136 RBI) at the plate. The Dodgers joined their rivals in the depths of the West, though Mike Piazza (45 HR, 125 RBI) did what he could to provide some enjoyment for the Bums’ handful of fans.

The Semi-Finals saw the Cardinals quickly dispatch the hapless A’s in 3 straight. Bob Gibson and Barney Schultz combined to win Game 1 by a score of 5-4. Mort Cooper then continued his hot late-season pitching, giving the Cards a 3-2 win in Game 2, with Schultz again picking up the save. Rogers Hornsby and Jack Clark homered in Game 3, and Schultz grabbed a 3-inning save as the Cardinals won 7-3, dooming the A’s to an early winter.

The Cubs and Yankees faced off in the other Semi-Final, and Cy Young winner Pete Alexander answered the opening bell with an eye-popping 3-hit shutout of the vaunted Yankees’ offense. Ol’ Pete struck out 8 and only allowed one base-runner to reach second base. Joe DiMaggio sprained his ankle on a hard slide into second, placing his participation in the rest of the series in doubt. Game Two saw Mordecai Brown give the Cubs a 5-3 lead through 7 innings, handing the 2 run lead to Fireman of the Year Bruce Sutter. Sutter got through the 8th, but in the 9th inning, he walked Ruth and allowed a single to Yogi Berra. This brought DiMaggio’s replacement, light-hitting Mickey Rivers, to the plate with two outs. Rivers shocked the Friendly Confines, and all of baseball, by knocking Sutter’s offering into Wrigley’s center field bleachers, giving the Yankees a 6-5 lead. The Cubs came back in the bottom of the 9th, as Jim Hickman singled in Andre Dawson to tie the game at 6. The Yankees gained the winning margin in the 11th inning, when Babe Ruth tripled, then scored on Roger Maris’ single to right, giving the Yankees a 7-6 win. Game 3 saw lefty Jack Pfiester dominate the left-handed Yankee bats, as he and the Cubs won an 8-1 decision. Kiki Cuyler’s 3-run dinger blew the game open, leaving the Yankees one game from elimination. Game 4 was more of the same, as Cubs arms quieted Yankee bats once again, this time with a complete game victory from Ferguson Jenkins. Jim Hickman and Sammy Sosa each hit 3-run homers to give the Cubs a 7-3 decision and a ticket to the World Series.

The World Series was a Midwestern grudge match, as the Cubs and Cardinals took their rivalry to a new level. Game 1 belonged to Bob Gibson, as he outdueled Alexander, striking out 10 and giving the Cardinals a 6-2 win. Rogers Hornsby and Ernie Banks homered in the contest. Jack Pfiester and the Cubs evened the series in Game 2 with a 9-6 win. Every time the Cardinals moved to within a run, the Cubs extended their lead. Sammy Sosa homered and drove in 3 for the Cubs. Game 3 started in the worst way for the Cubs, as Mark McGwire homered and the Cardinals took a 4-0 lead against Three-Finger Brown and the Cubs. Brown settled down after that, allowing no more runs, and Sammy Sosa homered twice and drove in 4 to pace the Cubs’ comeback attack.
Game 4 was a pitcher’s duel between Dizzy Dean and Ferguson Jenkins. Jack Clark’s first inning 2-run double provided the margin of victory, Dean gave way to Barney Schultz in the 8th, and Schultz protected the 3-2 lead, giving the Cardinals the victory and tying the series at 2 games apiece. Game 5 was a pivotal game, and saw a rematch of Game 1’s pitchers, Gibson and Alexander. The Cards scored 2 in the second, the fourth, and the fifth with help from Johnny Mize’s home run, Stan Musial’s triple, and Andre Dawson’s error in center field. Gibson then withstood a late Cubs rally, as Dawson, seeking to rectify his error, homered in the 8th and doubled in the 9th, but it wasn’t enough. The Cardinals took the game 6-5.
Now with their backs against the wall, the Cubs turned to lefty ace Jack Pfiester. Pfiester ruined the Cardinals’ expected celebration by throwing 7 innings of 2-hit ball, followed by Bruce Sutter’s save to tie the series at 3 games. Andre Dawson homered again, and the Cubs won 5-4.
Game 7 started with a bang, as the visiting Cubs scored 3 in the first, as Jim Hickman and Ron Santo homered off of Cards’ starter Howie Pollet. Rogers Hornsby brought the Redbirds fans back to life with a two-run homer of his own off Three-Finger Brown. Johnny Mize tied the game in the 4th as he singled Hornsby home. The Cards took a 5-3 lead in the fifth, as Stan Musial tripled, Hornsby doubled, and Mize singled, creating a buzz of excitement in Busch Stadium. The Cubs pulled to within 5-4 in the 7th, as Dawson singled, stole second, and scored on Kiki Cuyler’s single. The Cardinals blew the game open in the 8th, as Bill Delancey hit a two-run home run, followed by hits from Terry Moore, Ozzie Smith, Musial, and Hornsby, and when the dust had settled, the Cardinals led 9-4. Postseason MVP Barney Schultz, who had entered the game in the 8th, picked up his 5th postseason save, and the Show Me State had something new to display, a World Series championship.

[b:13294f942a]SEASON #11 RECAP[/b:13294f942a][/size:13294f942a]

As players stretched, fans settled into their seats, and managers contemplated their lineup cards for the last series of the season, all four playoff spots were still there for the taking by a record eight different teams. Never before in League history had so many teams been in contention going into the last weekend of the season. Every stadium hosted a series with playoff implications.

As the last series opened, the Cardinals and the Expansion squad sat atop the East with identical 86-73 records, while the once-hot Red Sox trailed by 2 games. In the Central, the White Sox led the Dodgers by one game. The West was a 3-team race, with the Giants on top, the Cubs trailing by one game, and the surprising Beltway team trailing by two.

[b:13294f942a]Game 160[/b:13294f942a]
The Expansion squad eliminated the first team from contention, as they batted around, scoring 8 in the 7th inning to defeat the Red Sox in come back fashion. In the other East contest, the Cardinals maintained their tie with Expansion by defeating the Yankees 8-4.
The Central saw the White Sox keep their one game lead by beating the Braves 7-4, while Duke Snider kept the Dodgers closed by cracking two home runs as the Dodgers bested the Reds 7-6.
In the Wild West, the Giants’ lead shrank to one game over the Cubs and two over the Beltway squad, as the Beltway boys spanked the division leaders 14-0 behind Jim Palmer’s 3-hitter and Goose Goslin’s 6 RBI day at the plate. The Cubs moved to within one game by beating the Pirates 5-3.

[b:13294f942a]Game 161[/b:13294f942a]
The Expansion team clinched at least a tie for the crown with a 15-8 pasting of the Red Sox, while the Cardinals lost a heart-breaker to the Yankees. Whitey Ford went the distance for the Bombers, and the Yankees won in the bottom of the 9th on a walk-off single by Bobby Murcer.
The Dodgers moved into a tie with the White Sox with one game remaining, as Sandy Koufax 3-hit the Reds and the Dodgers pounded out 21 hits. Eddie Mathews hit two home runs to power the Braves to a 14-6 win over the Pale Hose.
The West had a repeat of the previous day, as the Cubs beat the Pirates 9-4 behind Pete Alexander, and Walter Johnson and the Beltway Boys beat the Giants 9-4 as well. The two All-Star pitchers created a tie between the Cubs and Giants with one to play, while the streaking Beltway squad moved to within one game of their first playoff appearance.

[b:13294f942a]Game 162[/b:13294f942a]
Cy Young kept the Expansion squad from celebrating in Fenway Park, as he hurled a five-hit shutout. Max Lanier and the Cardinals shut the Yankees out as well by a 4-0 score, creating a tie between the Expansion squad and the Cardinals at 88-74.
In the Central, the White Sox got one last look at Cy Young winner Greg Maddux, and it was not a picture they want to see again. As the Dodgers were holding on to beat the Reds 9-8, Maddux was tossing a shutout in Comiskey Park, and when the dust settled, the Dodgers were the Central champions, and the White Sox were heading home for the winter.
The Beltway Boys culminated their improbable sweep of the Giants, as they scored 7 in the first to back the pitching of Bert Blyleven and won 11-2. In the 3-game series, they outscored the Giants 34-6. While the Beltway Boys did the dirty work, the Cubs slipped by both teams, as Kiki Cuyler went 4-5 with 2 homers and 6 RBI to bring the Western Division crown to Wrigley Field. The Cubs last-season run gave them the top record in the league at 89-73, while Beltway and the Giants were tied, one game back of the cubs at 88-74.
As the season wound down, Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis decreed that two-way ties would be broken first by head-to-head results, then by run differential, while 3-way ties would be broken by best record in division. Therefore, the tie in the East between the Expansion team and the Cardinals went to the Expansion squad because of run differential, since the teams had also tied in their head-to-head matchups, 12-12. This moved the Cardinals into a three-way tie for the Wild Card with the Giants and the white-hot Beltway team. By Landis’ ruling, however, the last playoff spot went to the Giants because of their best in-division record.

The Eastern Division champion Expansion squad was led by George Brett (19 HR, 105 RBI, .301 AVG) and Robin Yount (26 HR, 112 RBI), while Steve Carlton (19-12, 3.58 ERA, 303 K) and Mike Scott (15-20, 350 K) created a lot of whiffs, with each striking out over 300 batters. The tough-luck Cardinals were carried by a quartet of sluggers: MVP Rogers Hornsby (52 HR, 142 RBI, .343 AVG), Stan Musial (42 HR, 150 RBI, .304 AVG), Johnny Mize (55 HR, 114 RBI), and Mark McGwire (61 HR, 130 RBI). The Red Sox, who at one point appeared to be the class of the league, were led by batting champion Ted Williams (38 HR, 147 RBI, .356 AVG), while Tris Speaker (.335 AVG, 143 Runs) and Carl Yastrzemski (25 HR, 124 RBI) rounded out a great outfield for the Fenway faithful. Cy Young (18-16), 3.31 ERA) performed well on the mound for the BoSox. Surprisingly, the Yankees struggled, though the M & M Boys, Roger Maris (52 HR, 107 RBI) and Mickey Mantle (51 HR, 99 RBI) had good seasons.

The Central Division winners, the Dodgers, rode strong pitching by Sandy Koufax (22-13, 3.97 ERA) and Dazzy Vance (22-11, 4.40 ERA), power from Mike Piazza (49 HR, 138 RBI, .308 AVG), Roy Campanella (38 HR, 108 RBI), Duke Snider (35 HR, 104 RBI), and Pedro Guerrero (37 HR, 105 RBI), and inspiring play by spark-plug Jackie Robinson (111 Runs, .316 AVG) to the title. The White Sox almost parlayed the performances of 3 pitchers into the Central crown. Ed Walsh (25-14 .385 ERA), Eddie Cicotte (24-13, 3.53 ERA) , and closer Hoyt Wilhelm (44 Saves) were nothing less than stellar all season. Dick Allen (52 HR, 137 RBI) and Frank Thomas (36 HR, 111 RBI) provided most of the offense. The story for the Braves in Season #11 was Greg Maddux. The Braves hurler turned in a pitching performance for the ages, winning 29 games and posting a minuscule 2.42 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP in a league where offenses were loaded with sluggers. Hank Aaron (31 HR, 122 RBI, .306 AVG) and Eddie Mathews (34 HR, 106 RBI, .318 AVG) were the bright spots on offense. The Reds provided Crosley Field fans with a couple of nice offensive seasons by Frank Robinson (45 HR, 112 RBI) and George Foster (47 HR, 127 RBI), though the Reds struggled throughout the year.

The hard-charging Cubs won the West with 3 sluggers who hit at least 50 home runs. Gabby Hartnett (52 HR, 137 RBI), Hack Wilson (51 HR, 136 RBI), and Sammy Sosa (51 HR, 106 RBI) provided the power on the North Side, Kiki Cuyler (.324 AVG, 34 steals, 114 runs) provided the speed and run-scoring ability, and Pete Alexander (21-16, 3.36 ERA) and Mordecai Brown (21-14) pitched well for the division champs. The Giants stumbled down the stretch, yet were able to hold on for the Wild Card. Home Run champion Barry Bonds (63 HR, 160 RBI) was an MVP candidate, while Willie Mays (41 HR, 122 RBI, .313 AVG) and Willie McCovey (56 HR, 134 RBI) also brought the lumber. The Giants had 3 20-game winners as well in Christy Mathewson (24-12, 3.48 ERA), Carl Hubbell (23-16), and Gaylord Perry (20-17). The Beltway team almost erased a long history of second division finishes with a scalding September, only to fall just short in the end. Walter Johnson (21-18, 3.29 ERA) and Bert Blyleven (23-15) each won 20 games, while Tom Hall saved 26 games and contributed 155 innings out of the bullpen. The offense was generated by George Sisler (.333 AVG, 19 HR, 125 RBI, 114 Runs and 40 Steals), Rod Carew (.339 AVG, 123 Runs), Goose Goslin (24 HR, 123 RBI), and Joe Cronin (.310 AVG, 92 RBI). The only team that didn’t get in on the action was the Pirates, who managed only 57 wins. Despite 4 .300 hitters (Honus Wagner (.308 AVG), Paul Waner (.305 AVG), Pie Traynor (.336 AVG), Roberto Clemente (.310 AVG)) and Ralph Kiner’s 52 home runs, the Pirates were out of contention by Memorial Day.

The Semi-Finals began with the Dodgers traveling to Wrigley Field to face the Cubs. Pete Alexander made it appear that the Dodgers left their lumber on the train, as he hurled a 2-hit 2-0 shutout in Game 1. Ernie Banks homered and Harry Steinfeldt tripled for the Cubs. Game 2 saw Don Drysdale facing off against Mordecai Brown, and through 8 ½ innings, Drysdale and the Dodgers held a 4-3 lead. In the 9th, Ernie Banks’ two-out single scored Riggs Stephenson and tied the game. In the top of the 10th, Jackie Robinson homered off Brown to give the Dodgers a 5-4 lead, then Drysdale cam out for the 10th, promptly setting down 3 Cubs and tying the series 1-1. In Game 3, Jack Pfiester equaled his teammate Alexander, as he shut out the Bums 6-0. A 2-run homer by Banks and a 3-run homer by Gabby Hartnett gave Pfiester all the offense he would need. Game 4 was yet another showcase from these two pitching-rich clubs, as Orel Hershiser shut out the Cubs 3-0 on only 3 hits. On offense, Duke Snider and Mike Piazza hit back-to-back homers for the Trolley Dodgers. Though Game 5 was a rematch between Alexander and Sandy Koufax, the story of this game was the Cubs and their offense barrage. The baby bear batters lashed 18 hits, led by Ernie Banks, who went 4-5 with 2 home runs, giving him 4 for the series. The Cubs fans began buying World Series Game 1 tickets immediately.

The other Semi-Final pitted the Expansion team and the Giants. In Game 1, these two teams showed that they also had fine pitching, as Steve Carlton and Joe McGinnity tied up for an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel. Gorman Thomas home run in the 5th inning gave Expansion the winning margin in a 2-1 decision. Game 2 was another defensive struggle, as Mike Scott and the Expansion squad held on to a 1-0 lead through 7 complete innings. In the top of the 8th, Willie Mays’ 2-out, 2-run double plated Fred Lindstrom and Barry Bonds, and gave Christy Mathewson and the Giants the 2-1 win. Game 3 belonged to the Expansion bats, as Gorman Thomas hit two home runs, George Brett doubled twice, and Chuck Klein drove in 3 runs to power their team to a 10-5 lead. In Game 4, this series continued its see-saw action, as this time the Giants’ bats exploded, as Travis Jackson hit two home runs and drove in 4, to go along with homers by Mays, Bonds, and Chief Meyers and a complete game from Carl Hubbell, as the Giants won 13-3. In the winner-take-all Game 5, Kid Gleason handed the ball to Carlton again, while John McGraw turned to Iron Joe McGinnity. Expansion jumped on McGinnity early, led by Tony Gwynn and Robin Yount, and Carlton made it stand up, beating the Giants and McGinnity 6-3.

The World Series began in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field, and the Cubs wasted no time in welcoming Mike Scott and his Expansion teammates. Gabby Hartnett homered and Ryne Sandberg tripled in the 2nd inning, giving the Cubs a 3-0 lead, which they did not relinquish, winning 4-3. For Game 2, the wind was blowing out in Wrigley, as the Expansion team scored 5 first-inning runs, sparked by Gorman Thomas’ 3-run home run. However, just as Expansion knocked Fergie Jenkins from the game quickly, the Cubs made sure Game 2 would be a bullpen contest by sending Jerry Koosman to an early shower as well. The Cubs also plated 5 runs, led by Sammy Sosa’s 3-run shot. The battle of the bullpens would not be kind to the Cubs, however, as the Expansion offense continued to score, while Woodie Fryman and the Expansion bullpen shut down the Cubs offense. Expansion won 10-6, sending the series to Connie Mack Stadium. Pete Alexander of the Cubs was excited to face his former team, and he and Bruce Sutter made Riggs’ Stephenson’s 3rd inning 3-run home run hold up, winning 5-2. Game 4 saw Kid Gleason mix in 6 solid innings from Chris Short, 3 perfect relief innings from Jim Konstanty, and 3 RBI by Jeff Bagwell to cook up a 5-4 victory for his Expansion squad.

Gleason knew that it was crucial to win Game 5 before the series moved back to Chicago, so he turned to Mike Scott, the regular season strikeout king. Scott turned in a start that was one for the record books, as he struck out 18 Cubs in a 7-2 Expansion victory that thrilled the Expansion home fans. Catcher Gary Carter said, “That splitter was so nasty today, it was just unhittable, and almost uncatchable. I’m just glad I got tot try to catch it, instead of trying to hit it.”
Game 6 saw the Cubs up against the wall, and Fergie Jenkins answered the call for the Cubs. Jenkins pitched 7 strong innings, Sammy Sosa slammed a 6th inning grand slam, and the Cubs forced a Game 7 by winning the game 6-4.
Game 7 was a dream match-up of Steve Carlton and Pete Alexander, but the game didn’t live up to the hype, as Postseason MVP Gorman Thomas hit his 5th and 6th postseason home runs, George Brett hit a grand slam, and Kid Gleason’s Expansion squad never looked back en route to a 11-3 victory and a World Series Championship.
