Will these guys compete?

Postby Manofsteel » Sat Dec 11, 2010 7:50 pm

I know the defense can be a bit shoddy at spots, albeit I believe In manageable spots. But I think this team has the ability to compete, I think the pitching staff will be able to hold my guys in the game. Should definitely be able to score plenty of runs, im real happy with the big bats in holliday, cabrera & braun.I'm aware unfortunately these guys have quite a few neg clutch ratings, but happy that the bottom order guys have positive clutch. But I always like to hear feedback, positives, negatives etc.

I have to completely disagree with your outlook of your team.

Bourn, Polanco, and Hanigan are not good fits for that park at all. I'm not the biggest fan of Wright or Drew. I'd probably just keep Markakis because you'll need at least a few lefties and he can play every day and is great in RF. The other three (Braun, Holliday, and Cabrera) are keepers, too.

You need a lot more power sticks if you're going to play in a place like Camden. Definitely avoid any guys who have "weak" power. I'd only have one poor hitter (or two at most) in the whole lineup, and I wouldn't spend that much money on him, and I'd make sure he brought his glove to the park and/or got on base a lot.

A few other things I'd look into are at least one or two platoons and getting some injury prone players. Both of these can be great values.

I'd first look to explore any and all trades to get some better fits for Camden. Failing that, some potential available FA replacements:

C: Miguel Olivo, Kurt Suzuki, Miguel Montero
2B: Felipe Lopez (great OBP, low DPs for #2 hole), Howie Kendrick
3B: Mark Reynolds, Kevin Kouzmanoff, Mark Derosa, Brandon Inge
SS: J.J. Hardy
CF:Matt Kemp (great fit with all of those lefties in the division), Mike Cameron or Cody Ross for cheaper solutions

For pitching, I'd look to get Tejeda immediately. He's perfect for Camden with 0 bpSI and 0 bpHRs. I'd set his fatigue quite low and get as many innings out of him as possible. I'd look for other guys like that with 0 bpSIs and few, if any bpHRs. Gallardo would be good, except for those 5 bpHRs against righties. I'm not really in love with any of the other starters. I'm not sure exactly who to recommend, though, after Tejeda and Edinson Volquez :? I like have 6 starters, but I'd make #5 and #6 have different strengths (hitter park vs. pitcher park or BAL R vs. BAL L).

I don't understand any of the bullpen choices. Pick up Claudio Vargas and use him like Tejeda. Hopefully you can make some deals to pick up better bullpen pieces. The remaining FA market doesn't really have what I'd be looking for.

Best of luck,

Dave

You have $14 million on heavy left handed slanted hitters. Do you have a lot of LHSP in your league? If not those 2 guys are going to suck for you. I am in a league right now where everyone loaded up on LHSP so I picked up Upton just for that. Your team is going to give up a ton of unearned runs.
I don't give advice to whom to pick up but you do have many holes. I tend to draft defense, speed and atleast 1 guy who can middle relief for 2 innings and put him out there until his arm falls off.
AeroDave knows his stuff and can help you out more than I can with that.

Good Luck

I don't really like the pen at all. You have two S5 and three S6 starters in a hitters park. Your bullpen will get a LOT of work. Boyer is your only S2 and he stinks. K-Rod is a terrible park fit, and he's not good enough to be a decent closer without an awesome middle/setup guy, which you don't have. On your team having that .50 cent starter only is a mistake. You need an extra arm out there.

On offense, too many lefties for your park. You need some right handed mashers who can hit rightys. Good luck, but if this were my team, I'd still be working on it.

I agree with apolivka. You've made a few of the moves I've recommended, but I think this team still needs a lot more work to be competitive in your park and division.

A question for a few vets I have the option of dropping gallardo who is getting kicked around and downgrade him to Martinez who may be the only viable option left . I would then use the extra salary to replace Markakis with werth.. Good move yes or no or just stand pat?

Stand pat if you can't make a TRADE. Even though you face a lot of lefties in your division, and Werth would be good for that, you already have enough in Braun, Wright, and Victorino. Dropping players is almost never advisable, although Gallardo is a bad fit for Camden (as I intimated earlier).
