good old Jimmy Palmer

after five starts he is 0-3 with 40.2 innings pitched giving up 40 hits and 30 walks. Am I reading something wrong on his cards? Is there something I'm missing here? Which one of his seasons warrents such abuse?

The word on the street is he does not pitch to his card for most people. You must be one of them

Palmer's cards are my #2 disappointment with the 70's set (after Lynn not having 1975). Palmer was one of my heroes and while the seasons selected are relatively representative, I simply do not see how the actual cards can recreate those results. The cards are not worth the money.

Definitely not pitching to the numbers. Looking at his card for the 1972 season, it doesn't look like that card would ever produce those numbers.

I've talked about this for, oh I don't know, years now...Palmer doesn't have 2 of his Cy Young seasons from the 70's and you could argue pretty easy he's missing his best season from the 70's (1975)...I'm not sure what SOM has against using 1975 cards...I say that because you don't have either MVP, either Cy Young, and only one ROY card as choices...Palmer is arguably the most under performing superstar season for season in the 70's game.

You need to understand context. He pitched in a very favorable pitchers park throughout his career, he had teams like the Indians and Brewers in his division to pitch against all the time, and most importantly he had the best defense in baseball behind him (Belanger 1ss, Brooks 1 3b, Blair 1 cf, Grich 1 2b, etc.), all of which makes his strat card underperform its numbers.

That is an outstanding point. The cards are supposed to be designed to reproduce their numbers in a stock league with all things equal.

I agree with jmc316 too. There are way too many marquee seasons missing from some of these guys. Not having 1975 Fred Lynn is terrible.

All very good points but he also had Fenway Park, Tiger Std, and Yankee Std (where as a RHP no lefty bat ever sat) in his division. He also pitched most of the 70's with the DH in place, and in real life never surrendered a grand slam in his career...its all about the eye test...a guy who won 3 Cy Youngs in the decade, had the most wins in the decade, and was a HOFer should perform better

Had Palmer on one of my thoroughly average Astrodome teams. He finished with a 21-13 record and a 1.28 WHIP. This squad also featured Bowa at SS and a "1" in CF, fwiw.
Recently I opted for Jim Hunter over Palmer. I'm still not sure I made the right choice, as Hunter can be vulnerable to lefties. YMMV.
