I think you have a reading comprehension problem. Maybe you should re-read what I wrote before making your snide little comments.

I am talking about one particular friend. I am not saying everyone should be chained together until they die. You come across as angry and not very smart when you attempt to insult people you don't really know.

This ESPN article about Reyes sums it up for Mets fans.

Striking, comparing it to T. Williams, when he ended at .406 on the last day of the season. But then, it's probably not fair to compare Reyes to Williams, in any fashion. Different eras, different mind sets, and different societal value systems, I think.

The Ted Williams story is one of my favorites. I guess the Reyes situation is pretty much the opposite.

Lots of crap has happened on the last day of the season. Probably the worst was when, in 1910, the St. Louis Browns basically gave a batting title to Nap LaJoie rather than allow Cobb to win it. If I remember correctly, they had their 3rd baseman playing on the OF grass and he went 7 for 8 in a doubleheader.

I would guess that at least a dozen other players have either sat out the last game of the season entirely or left the game after their first hit to ensure winning the title. I'm sure that, over the next couple of weeks, we'll see "top 10" lists of junk that has happened to decide batting titles. The baseball writers have to realize it's a great opportunity for them to write an article that will get a lot of play and allow them to ring the cash register.

And, in Reyes' case, how would you feel about the situation if he had stayed in the game and torn up a knee trying to make a tough play in the field, with his impending FA status? Would you admire him for being a "competitor" and costing himself tens of millions of dollars to play in a meaningless game. Personally, I'd think he was a fool.

As for the fans, anyone who buys a ticket to the last game of the season has to understand that they are more than likely going to be viewing a preview of a spring training game for the next season. This is especially true of the walk-up gate. I feel sorry for any ticket buyer who believes otherwise; it's sad to see such blatant idiocy on public display.

Take a breath and say it with me...

What would Derek Jeter do?

We know what DJ would do regarding the Reyes thing, don't we?

and on the Lackey thing....

DJ again has it pretty straight on the Marriage thing, only max 3 year contracts with the best organizations on the planet.
I bet if your on the DL for team Jeter, you know there will be a call-up while you rehab, but I bet all expenses would be paid, etc.

If I were him I'd stay totally married to baseball too.

It really is a test of how much you really love someone when they come down with a life threatening illness. I have a neighbor around my age (40's). He got married early and a few years into his marriage, his wife was diagnosed with MS. She's pretty bad now, but he is with her for the long haul. He doesn't have kids. You can tell he loves his wife by the sacrifices he has made and that he doesn't have a hint of regret. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I have a lot of respect for him.

Rabid, this is truly a good man and a person i definitely admire. That is a class move! Unfortunately in our society we have a huge problem that there are a lot of PEOPLE, men and woman that turn and run at the first sign of difficulty. [b:09c08209bb]For better or worse, til death do us part[/b:09c08209bb], is not nearly as important as it should be. I think people should give a LOT more thought into getting married before saying I do than thinking about it afterward. I for one take the oath that i took 16 years ago very seriously and it is refreshing to see that there are still some people out there that do as well.

Thanks for posting that!!!

As a side note , as a Met Fan, i am truly disgusted with what this franchise has become. Earlier in the summer I was hoping the mets would trade wright to free up money to resign Reyes. But now i just hope they trade them all and start from scratch. Trade Wilpon as well. I could have cared less about what Reyes did yesterday until i heard about his post game comments! To not at least try have some humility about it makes me feel a little better about the 2 draft picks that the Mets will get, than squander, in next years amateur draft. So Long Jose!!!! Go Yanks and Cardinals!!!!

Pick on Jeter.

I like that he doesn't make a commitment he's not ready to honor. If you were him, you could either serial date models and actresses or you could marry one. If he's not ready to settle down with one, why go through the motions (like A-Rod or apparently Lackey)? Or why be careless (Bedard)?

I say this as someone happily married. It's not for everyone.

Lifelong Met fan here, but the way he did this was pure bonehead.

Too run off 1st base right away was in incredibly bad taste. Maybe his agent thought he'd get a huge standing ovation or something. But to run off the base right after a bunt base hit will haunt the Mets for years...really crappy. Reyes is a special talent, but def. NOT worth top dollar due to his injuries, and how many more years will he be able to run the way he does? His talents could be greatly reduced in 2 years...let him go, save the money for other players...

[quote:80cce5c447]if he played the whole game and went 1 for 5, then Braun got 3 hits later in the day, he would've been criticized. [/quote:80cce5c447]Hmm. How would that have worked?
