Now the way I wanted it, was C Johnson to go to 3rd and Hall (or best hitter) to go to DH. Did I do something wrong?

Instead, HAL put Hall or 3rd and kept Chris John at DH, leading to an error and the loss.

Bernie put in the backup DH spot just recently. When he did it, I recall that he said that unlike the rest of the backups, the DH backup didn't go more than "1 deep". So, an injury an another position that slotted multiple substitutions probably wouldn't work optimally.

So, this example falls in that category. The backup DH was advertised as "better than nothing, but not necessarily optimal". so there you go. It works just like he said. :)
