trades and traders

Trading is some of the best fun about our game. Of course not all trades look good on paper but if both teams are filling needs whats the difference. Too often trades are offered that seem totaly oblivious to the other teams needs. I am always willing to trade but I have trouble responding to the messages from teams that announce player A,B,C, and D are avaliable and then you make an offer,the offer is declined without comment and one day later you see the same message.Most times its from managers that draft multi carded players at the lowest amount, have a glut of players at a position and then want to rape you in trade as you try to fill a hole. Not all managers are like that and while Im complaining let me say something positive also, In 7 plus years ive been playing this game on-line , I have found Mr Nevdully to always interact with reason and respect. There are other good guys out there as well but I wish there was more.

Thanks for the props Bill, it's as much, if not more, a reflection of you than me. In the last year or so I've gotten less tolerant and more frustrated with trading and my attitude isn't always good.

Yes, I have been quite amazed by the ancient Grindi - PBTR thread. If the information about PBTR's true identity is correct, he is quite the personality, to put it in a PC phraseology.

At one time I would average around half a dozen trades in most leagues.
Lately have been making fewer. Seems no matter how good a player you advertise people send offers for everyone you did not say was available. There is also a tendency to get offers for players you cannot afford to give up.

Good example is the last 2 leagues I have been in. In one only shortstop I had was Larkin. Seems like everyone that talked trade with me wanted Larkin in the deals. I tried to explain he was my only shortstop and could not afford to part with him given what was left on FA list. In a present preseason league I have Larkin again but also have 3 other shortstops I would not mind using making Larkin expendable. Do I get offers now? No. Reason is obvious. People assume with multiple on roster you will have to drop one of them so why offer fair trade value? Just wait it out and hope they drop one of them.

Trading has traditionally been one of the more fun aspects. But increasingly it is not worth the effort. Why waste time trying to get someone to offer you fair value for what you have so both teams fill a need when you can now in most cases get better than what you are offered by scanning the FA list?

I find it frustrating too when someone doesnt respond to a written note about a trade...less so with just an offer, but still would be nice to have an explanation-
I do know that sometimes people get a whole bunch of offers so might make one not feel like responding to em all...but that is what should happen.

When I offer a trade, I always write a note, even if it's really brief, to explain what I'm thinking. Basically, I'm trying to get at least an explanation or maybe a counter offer.

When I get offered a trade, I always write something. Even if it's just "sorry, I really want that guy and he was very high on my draft list, I'll let you know if I change my mind."

How long does that take?

Mostly I just get "declined"

I've never mae a trade. The dollar amounts must be equal? How do trades work?

The dollar amounts do not have to be equal though that helps. Only perceived value or benefit to the teams needs to be equal though for a trade to be fair. In fact typically give up 10-20% more than I get back on most offers when I am targeting a specific need.

For example if I perceive I need bullpen help I may offer a 7 or 8 mil hitter for a middle of the road reliever. Or I may offer a 9+ mil guy for a really good reliever. There have been times my perceived need for a reliever is enough I have offered 10+ hitters, though that is rare.

Best prescription for a good trade in my opinion is having 2 or more of something and trading your surplus to someone who has 2 or more of something else where you have a need.

I've made some offers that didn't make sense, based on the other guys plans. I thought the guy had a hole at 3b, and I think I offered Torre, he replied
"Actually, no. I'm going to slide Delahanty to 3B vs lefties. Thanks."
30 secs to type that reply, and I see what he's doing, and it's all good.

I think I've been a party in all 3 of the 4 trades in this particular league.

It's been said a little communication goes a long way
