Invitational league: Weinberg vs Petrosian

Postby JohnnyBlazers » Mon Jan 23, 2012 9:09 pm

you got a point there Weinberg, as reflected in the pricing of some of the cards (May, Brown). I can tell you that I almost always employ a super reliever, and in BS Finals, I will probably use one again. If this becomes an issue, and in the spirit of democracy, when we get The Finals league going, we should put it to a vote. No more than 200 innings for any reliever and if he exceeds that, the manager must drop him, take the 20% hit and get another less-than stellar reliever. The poll that I put out shows (so far) that 75% feel it is a non-issue, fwiw.

I hope that you remain in the league because you and Petro are two of the best managers going right now and the other managers want to test their mettle so to speak 8-)

[quote:953d3de726="weinberg"]I am not using DD for Murray, since none exist. I am just telling you who Murray is most like, according to my numbers.

Your arguments on the Kaiser and Miljus support my argument not yours. Kaiser is comparatively priced when he is used at 154ip. Miljus is comparatively priced when used at 153 ip.

Now, if Miljus is used for 310 ip, then that is where the gaming of the system occurs.[/quote:953d3de726]

I'm not sure where you are getting 300 IP of Miljus since He averages the number I put up. I'm not going to explain how averages work because it's assumed that everyone here knows. If you don't, PM and I'll send you an excel file you can play with.

Similarly, I'm not going to explain why your numbers for Murray don't count in detail. Small sample size, uneven comp, unverifiable, etc. Comping your number for Murray to DD's all cap actual for Matty doesn't make sense, as you don't play 60 or 200/live. Uneven comp and all.

potkettleblack: you are saying that miljus averages 154ip. doesnt that mean that the average manager is paying $4.61m to purchase 154ip out of miljus?

so if someone finds a way to exploit the game engine to get double that out of miljus (or 308 ip) arent they getting 154 free innings? isnt that the same as paying $14.54m for 550 ab from bonds, and then magically finding a way to cheat the system and get 1100 ab out of bonds? how is that not exactly what exploiting a super reliever is doing? and if it is, then how is it legit?

3. I'm not at all sure what your's or Petro's testicles have to do with any of this.[/quote:d946f42697]

I am not at all sure we can assume testes on anyone...nor drinking age...nor lack of criminal record...nor {fill in the blank} ...

Usernames fellas/gals/kids. Unless it's someone I personally know, I assume it is Everyman.

Well if we're moving on with this thing, (which it seems like everyone's on board with) let's let Salt know so he can add rburgh and we can get the draft underway again.

I find it humorous that this league fell apart because Petro picked Dale Murray with his first pick. Who cares? We just completed two 100 mil supermanager invitationals and Dale Murray was in my division in both leagues.....I won both divisions. Having Dale Murray on your roster is not a guarantee of success. Is he good? Sure. Good enough to tilt the dynamics of a league so much that it makes you want to pick up your bat and ball and go home. Hardly. You call it cheating, I call it a strategy. Petro is using the tools and parameters provided him, he is not rewriting code or using loaded virtual dice.

I personally have zero faith in all strat relievers and their settings and I love playing against teams in the lower caps that rely on them. It tells me that (A) they now have less money to spend on hitting which we all know is the bread and butter of this game or (B) they are not spending much on their starters which usually means they are in the hole by the time their high priced RP's come in. There were a couple of mentions in this thread about teams that have an inordinate amount of complete games. At 100 mil I abuse my starters and bench my bullpen, which are all typically .50 players. Haven't checked in awhile but I had three teams in the record books for complete games. Cheating? No way. Realistic? No more realisitic than Blanchards HR's or teams that lead off with Frank Thomas. I was tired of HAL bringing in my 2 mil RP's to blow saves for my 10 mil SP's and I was forced to find a solution that works for me.

A good and competitive manager will find a way to counter anothers strategy. Isn't that the whole point of this game anyways?

Build yourself a better mousetrap.

Well said. Weinberg tends to write in terms of absolutes. And there are no sure things in this game, just probabilities. No one player creates a decisive advantage to his owner. But in the right context, they can certainly contribute.
