no one hits below the Butera line ....

There's a SABR stat called TAv ("true average," formerly called eqAv or "equivalent average").

In 2011, Drew Butera had the lowest TAv of any batter with more than 250 PA since at least 1950. The worst in sixty years. And his splits show him "better" against lefties (not saying much) so he was really incredibly awful against righties.

It's mentioned here:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=1600

So here's Butera's card in the upcoming set:

v. L : 15.2 OB, 12.8 TB, 0.1 HR, no BPHR, 27 DP (note, as a RH he'll be helped by standard-splits pitching here, when it's on the pitcher's card)

v. R: 9.2 OB, 13.7 TB, no BP singles, 1.3 HR, "w" power, 28 DP

So what do you think? Worst card in 60 years (for those over 250 PA)? Worst, especially against righties?

Sorry, I don't think Butera will even have the worst card in the 2011 game. I think that distinction will go to Michael Saunders.

Try as they will these cards can not rival the futility and shear beauty of Tony Pena Jr.'s perfect card (2009). Check it out:

The Tony Pena Jr. card is epic, and we will be hard pressed to ever see it equaled. Maybe a few more gbAs and strikeouts...

I played in a Loser's league once where the object was to lose as many games as possible. I gave Al Pardo ( http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/stratomatic/league/player.html?player_id=39248&year=1986 ) over 600 PAs. He had zero OB chances vs. LHP and about 2 vs. RHP. Even with the 5 HRs he hit, he still ended up with probably one of the worst offensive performances ever. Dave Stapleton and Barry Bonnell put up some "impressive" numbers as well:

My team BA ended up at .206 and I had easily the worst offense in the league scoring only 428 runs, but my pitching was just too good and I ended up losing only 101. :)

This suggests that SOM isn't keeping up with sabermetrics ... The SABR guys say Butera 2011 is the worst single-season hitter in several generations.

I just checked, and I don't think Saunders, Pena, or Pardo had 250 PAs in the seasons for the cards mentioned above.

The question is: worst with 250 or more PAs.

Drew's only clean hit vs right handers which he faced 72% of the time in 234 official at bats is 2-2 and its a Homer.

2011 Brignac is pretty comparable. Butera wins out because he hits into DPs whereas Brignac just Ks. In his favor, Butera has a higher injury roll, massive power in comparison  ...and he can bunt! :P

I like the special defensive bonus of a 42 error rating on Pena's card. I'll bet there are some full time middle infield guys from the 60s paper card sets who were damn near as bad as Butera, but maybe not.
