It's funny yesterday I posted about playing strat back in the sixties.We had about eight guys from 65 to 71,it ended when we started to go off to college, every year we each picked three or so teams and played out the prior years schedule. The entire schedule.
We rolled dice to determine draft order and choose teams,serpentine I think. We each had our favorite teams as the years went by.I usually drafted Houston and San Diego late in the draft ,two dogs I grew fond of. In tight game when Jim 'The Toy Cannon' Wynn got up in a clutch situation I would yell, as I rolled the dice in my hand CANNON and as I released the dice BLAST. Jimmy came through a lot. Wynn belongs in the Hall IMHO.
We played the games at my best friends house.We all almost lived there all summer.Two strat boards keeping four guys busy,a pool and a half court B-Ball keeping the other guys busy. One guy,my friends cousin lived about four miles away,in the rich part of town , down by the water.The town being Massapequa NY. His name was Robert ,since he wasn't around as much as the rest,he would fall behind on the schedule. When he finallly showed up the rest of us would claim dibs on him " I got Robert First'. The guy would play eight straight hours. We seldom hung out at Roberts down through the years.If we had I might recall a kid on his block who in retrospect Robert says was one of the kids in the background,Seinfeld was his name .I do not have any memory of him.
My best friend ran the league,kept it going ,made sure the stats were meticulously kept,he was the commish He drafted the Yankees every year.Those Yankees were not The Bronx Bombers by any means but he won a couple of World Championships with them. He turned Roy White into Mickey Mantle.
Years pass my friend became a lawyer,no one is perfect.He put seven kids through Boston College. Was beach club tennis champ till he was 45 ,think The Flamingo Kid.

.Not at a board on the court or in the pool.Three of us eventually went to college on basketball scholarships ,I didn't ,cut as a walk -on in 1971 it still hurts.So yesterday I was at my little brothers house with my son watching the NCAA tourney.For years our old group got together,whoever could make it, for one afternoon of NCAA games.
we stopped about ten years ago.The phone rings my wife tells me she just got off the phone and my best friend is dead.
i don.t know what else to write at this point. I miss him allready.Life is so damn short my father and best friend are gone.

Great post, manleeman. I started playing the APBA board game in 1956 or so -- Mantle, Aaron, Kaline, etc. -- and only played for a few years before my family moved out of Detroit. It was great fun, though, and enhanced my love of both baseball and stats.

I bought my first copy of the Sporting News at Briggs Stadium and probably was one of the few 10-year-olds in the country who was a subscriber. I would run home for lunch on the day it was delivered and read it from cover to cover. I still have a number of their annual baseball guides buried somewhere in the basement.

I lost track of all of those APBA players until last year, when one of them found me on Facebook. Not all of them have survived, but the memories are still held fondly.
