Defense not all it's cracked up to be ...

One of my favorite pastimes is to plug different id numbers in and "surf" the various leagues that are running to see how players are performing in a variety of parks and divisions.

In doing so I stumbled across this particular team that currently has about a .625 winning pct. at about the half way point.

The REALLY intersting thing is that he is comfortably leading his leading his division (he plays at Safeco in a Div. with a Wrigley, a Jacobs, and a Camden Yards) with a team that features a [b:0254f08490]"3"[/b:0254f08490] (range factor) at [b:0254f08490]2B, SS AND CF[/b:0254f08490].

He does have solid pitching (3rd overall in ERA) and a productive offense (3rd overall in Runs scored) but nothing that sticks out OTHER than the [b:0254f08490]3's at the three middle defensive positions[/b:0254f08490].

And here we are always trying to have two's or better.

With really good pitching, and 3's that hit very well, I don't see why it couldn't work.

THAT doesn't apply to "Rolls Royce" Clayton though!

I'm about to do the same thing in a league starting Monday. I believe you are in that league sandlotshrink. Hell, I've got 3's all over the place! Defense is very overrated.

I have to say I've been frustrated at teams that would take 2 of 3 from me in prior years using 3s and 4s in the middle...I remember saying it won't last, will even out. Well with this year's prices maybe I'm the one who has it wrong--this year it seems it should most definitely be considered with some of those cards.
I even went on the wild side and got Ibanez to play LF on one team...with a 2 for defensive replacment of course--can't go cold turkey!

I think so too tersignf.

I feel that you have to pay TOO much of a premium this season for the better offensive 1's and 2's in the Middle Defense positions.

So much so that the better offensive 3's have become the more efficient per price.

I've never had a problem playing 3s up the middle. One of my best teams last year had Huff (4) at 3B, Blake (4) at 1B, Polanco (3) at 2B, Guerrero (3) in RF and Berkman (3) in LF. I had 2s everywhere else (Kotsay, Vizquel and Hernandez at C). I won a World Series with that team.
