Baseball question RE: Hitting streaks for the record book.

Just curious. With Jimmy Rollins of the Phils now up to a 35 game hitting streak, what happens if he gets a hit today, and ends the season with a 36 game hitting streak? Does he start the '06 season with an active 36 game hitting streak, and thus just 20 behind Joltin Joe's streak? Or do they re-set him at 0 to start '06, as far as the record goes?

I believe that it carries over. But it won't and can't be considered the same.

The interesting thing is if the Phillies make the playoffs and he goes hitless in one of those games... that will make the record evn more tarnished, because he actually played games that counted in between, though they don't count for the streak.

Thanks. Nothing against Jimmy, but I hope he doesn't end the season at 36 straight games, and then get a hit in his first 21 games next season. I don't think many would honor it the same as Joe's 56 games in one season. Probably have to get the old asterick out for the record book.

They have said that if he breaks it, it would be the record for consecutive seasons, while joe d would still hold the record for a single season. I think it would be tougher to break the record that way because he is red hot now and to start out completely new will be tough. I doubt he will break it, but it will be interesting when the season starts.

I concur w/ Harry Lime. I remember Pete Rose's 44-game streak in '78. Network TV coverage would be interrupted for each of his at-bats by the time the streak had reached close to 40 if my recollection is correct. Rollins really hasn't gotten the same treatment as Pete did. Pete's streak ended at Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta of all places when all the Braves really had for pitchers were Gene Garber and an aging Phil Niekro.

It would kinda be a tiger-slam thing - with an asterik - but what if he kept going and hit in 44 more games in 2006 to start the season - then there would be a tie for single season NL mark and an asterices all over the place - NL Record, tied ML Record over two seasons etc...
But it is Jimmy Rollins playing in Philly -0 it won't get Pete Rose coverage - and if you remember Garber did not come close to throwing a strike in Pete's last at bat.
