Do you know the answer?

A R1C6 comes into the game in the 8th inning winning 9-1. In the 8th inning he gives up 6 hits and 6 runs and is obviously weak. He enters the ninth with a two run lead and gives up a HR to the first batter. Is he weak now or not? I believe he is not weak because he gave up the HR and is now in is C6 closer mode with three outs used up. Is that correct? Even though he gave up seven runs, he should not be weak.

I don't know for sure, but would guess he was weak in the eigth inning whenever he reaches the normal fatigue rule for any reliever, which I believe is three hits/BB's in the inning he gets tired. As it is not a save situation, the R(1) would apply, so he would have become fatigued in the eigth inning.

My understanding of the rules is that once a pitcher becomes fatigued the condition doesn't reverse, even if the game situation changes. I could be wrong but off the top of my knob that's what I remember.

Agree with dj.

28.33 If the pitcher begins his appearance with his regular POW and the game becomes a closer situation, he changes to his closer endurance rating. At that time, reduce his closer endurance by the number of outs he has already recorded. This number cannot be reduced to lower than 0, unless the pitcher's closer endurance is "N".

It seems crazy but unless I am reading the rules incorrectly, once the game becomes a closer situation the pitcher changes to his closer endurance. It seems as if he could be weak in the 8th and not in the 9th-which seems a little out of whack.

Rule 27.2 covers this:[quote:15eed527d2]Once a pitcher reaches his POW, it cannot be overcome, no matter how well he pitches afterwards.[/quote:15eed527d2]
So no, he cannot become "un-tired."
