Weirdest Cy Young Award

Weirdest Cy Young Award

Postby MICHAELEVANS » Tue Oct 04, 2005 12:55 pm

Recently, Sandy Koufax won the Cy Young for me, with a team that finished 3 out of first place, and missed the WC by 1 game. That, in and of itself is not weird, but Sandy's record does not seem very Cy Young-esque to me. Here is his record:

G W L IP ShO H ER BB SO ERA Whip
41 15 11 313 3 247 104 79 315 2.99 1.04

He was third on my team for wins, and did not lead the league in any catagory except strikeouts. Pete (also on my team) had more wins, more shutouts, a lower ERA. There was a 20 game winner in the league, and many pitchers who won more games. I can't figure out how Sandy won the Cy Young, given a somewhat lackluster performance. All I can figure out is that HAL grossly overvalues the strikeout when awarding the Cy Young. Pete came in 2nd in voting, but even he didn't seem to deserve the award. Does anyone know exactly what goes into the Cy Young voting here?

I believe HAL values strikeouts alot too.

I just had a seaon finish where Clemens won the Cy with a 19-13 record (not my team) and Babe Adams had a 23-6 record. But Clemens had more K's.

Pete beat him in Whip, 1.02 to 1.04.
