March Madness - Round 2

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

Yeah, I would be the next "Rocky" challenger in the ring with PanzerAce.
I'll be running around the ring for the next 8 weeks.
But it's more like paint ball, you hope the big snipers shoot everyone else first. I was fortunate to get some good shots off in round 1.

Seeding: How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb?

Postby Semper Gumby » Sat Jun 10, 2006 11:12 am

Since I'm one of the bottom seeded teams, I figure I have a dog in this fight but not necessarily an axe to grind on the outcome.

While I may have missed the bracket-tology during one of my business trips but I'm not sure this stratification unsures each League / Division race jumps off from the same starting point.

Perhaps the assumption is we are all equally situated in skill base thus the divisional make-up is moot yet it seems the Top Seeded team in the East Conferences are provided a leg up on their bracket mates.

For example, in Bracket 1 / Eastern Division - the ranking difference between the 1st / 2nd seeded teams is (East Division) is [b:2d63b88193]17[/b:2d63b88193] and its last ranked team is [b:2d63b88193]35 [/b:2d63b88193]rungs.

On the other hand, in the Bracket 1 / Western Division, we have a[b:2d63b88193] 5 [/b:2d63b88193]ranked place difference between the 1st and 2nd seeded teams and a [b:2d63b88193]23[/b:2d63b88193] rung difference over the 4th seeded team in that division.

The magnitudes are roughly the same in the other Brackets (difference between 1st seed and the 2d / 4th seeds:

Bracket 2 / East: 15 / 33 places
Bracket 2 / Central: 9/ 27 places
Bracket 2 / West: 3 / 21 places

Bracket 3 / East: 13 / 31 places
Bracket 3 / Central: 11 / 29 places
Bracket 3 / West: 1 / 19 places

Thus, the East Top seed, arguably, has a walk in the park while the West seeded teams are fighting the good fight.

Maybe I missed the logic here but I'd propose the following brackets -

[list:2d63b88193]E: 1, 10, 19, 28
C: 4, 13, 22, 31
W: 7, 16, 25, 34

E: 2, 11, 20, 29
C: 5, 14, 23, 32
W: 8, 17, 26, 35

E: 3, 12, 21, 30
C: 6, 15, 24, 33
W: 9, 18, 27, 36[/list:u:2d63b88193]

In this construct, each divisional team is no more than 9 rankings from its next divisional competitor. Therefore, the top and last seeds in each division are no more than 27 rankings from the other.

Perhaps this seems silly, but I'd argue that there is a HUGE drop off in competitive experience between the 1st seed and the 36th seeded team. Hell, I've only managed 6 teams in the 80s and I'm ranked #43 overall and #32 for this tourney.

Bracket 1
E - 1, 18, 19, 36
C - 6, 13, 24, 31
W - 7, 12, 25, 30

Bracket 2
E - 2, 17, 20, 35
C - 5, 14, 23, 32
W - 8, 11, 26, 29

Bracket 3
E - 3, 16, 21, 34
C - 4, 15, 22, 33
W - 9, 10, 27, 28

If you look at the above, each division in each bracket totals 74 (unless I screwed up). In any tournament, the lowest seed faces the highest seed. In the NCAAs, 64 plays 1 and the winner of that game (which has always been the 1 to date) plays the winner of the 8-9 game. If all seeds hold, 1 plays 8, the highest seed left in the bracket.

The original brackets were set up in an identical fashion and, in the first round, we saw 2 top 10s miss the cut (including the #2), 1 in the teens, 3 in the 20s, 4 in the 30s and 2 in the 40s. Pretty even breakdown.

I believe the above formula accurately reflects the NCAAs. If it does not, please explain why and we can make corrections. That being said, while I agree there is some difference between Sykes, Panzer, etc., and the high seeds, I do think there is little difference between groupings of seeds (say, 1-10, 11-20, 20-30, etc.).

You can easily argue the rankings of the managers because of SOM stupid ranking system but the top seeds should have the easiest route to make it to the next round. Jablowmi's setup makes it easier on the east teams because they are the top seeds. The west teams should struggle more because they theoretically aren't as good and should have a tougher time. I could be wrong and again the SOM rankings stink, but Semper's system seems to be a handicapped system making it easier for the lower ranked manager to advance.

Sooooo? I assume we are going forward with the original seedings as I haven't seen anything to the contrary. If so, lets start opening some leagues. I've got my team ready to go, but I'm in the West...

Sorry about that, ccangerame. I must have mixed you up with someone else - tough trying to figure out the names. I have an extra playoff team bolded up above. If someone can figure it out, let me know.

As for the brackets, let's play ball.
