Player Salaries

Postby AdamPhoenix » Tue Oct 11, 2005 9:34 pm

I am new to this game online (today is actually my first day) and I am currently deciding on how to handle the draft. But my question has to do with certain player salaries, when going through LF's, I noticed this odditiy:

Johnny Grubb - $4.32M
Joe Carter - $4.22M
George Bell - $4.10M
Kirk Gibson - $3.82M

I included the last three guys as a comparisson to Grubb. Now my question is, this is a glitch in the game otherwise how can one justify Johnny Grubb having a salary as high as he does? Also, does anyone else know of any players who are significantly underpriced the same way Grubb is significantly overpriced (and please the key is significant - i.e. talking millions)

Mostly, TSN did a pretty good job with player salaries, but some of the salaries are widely conceded to be off--in a few cases by a very considerable margin. Grubb is a case in point among hitters, as is Dusty Baker (he's a good player, but probably at least a $1M too high). Eric Plunk and Mark Langston are infamous examples among pitchers.

The net effect is that these overpriced players are rarely if ever drafted, but there are many other players to choose from. If you get one of these booby-prizes in the autodraft, you can drop them during waivers or the free agent period and pick up somebody more appropriately priced. I've gotten Plunk and Langston that way, but believe me, they didn't stay long on my team.

Players have been calling for a tweak in the pricing of such players for some time. TSN has recently been making a number of welcome revisions to the game and a price tweak might well be in the offing soon.

I would strongly recommend sticking with the game. It is a lot of fun and highly addictive. Trying to figure out the mystery card while trying to keep you team winning is a lot of fun, and the free agent rules give you a lot of flexibility.

While you're waiting for your league to form, you might enjoy reading the discussions of over and underpriced players on the old version of this forum. I bumped those two discussions to the top of the first page. There is lots of other great info in the old forum:

In the right situation, any of the guys you mentioned (or Outta Leftfield mentioned) can be useful. I had Johnny Grubb on a team and he mauled right handed pitching, and it wasn't even in a hitters park. He's also a 2 in the field, which doesn't hurt.

As with anything else in life, you should pay for the players you think are worth it and avoid the guys you feel are overpriced.
