How many platoons?

How many platoons?

Postby blsmith7 » Wed Oct 12, 2005 8:37 pm

I've never really had more than one platoon before. On this team (season starts Monday), I currently have two platoons. Any experiences or thoughts on this? My team is in Yankee '56, with another Yankee '56, a Sportsman, and a Griffiths. There are also a couple other '56s in the league. I will face about 6 LHPs in my division, so it's split rather evenly there.

My platoons are:

CF - Dykstra/Lemon
RF - Oliva/Evans

vs. RHP
Wagner SS
Dykstra CF
Brett 3B
Oliva RF
Covington DH
R. Collins 1B
Ennis LF
May C
Bishop 2B

vs. LHP
Wagner SS
R. Collins 1B
Ennis LF
Brett 3B
Evans RF
Covington DH
Lemon CF
May C
Bishop 2B

This is a $100 dollar league, so not much out there now. So, how do these lineups look?

No critics out there? I take that to mean the team looks pretty good. Man, I hate having 9 days after the draft before the season begins. I'm just going crazy waiting.

You're team's OK. The lineup certainly doesn't strike fear in my heart... and a Yankee '56 lineup should. Seems like you need a LH hitter who can hit LHP. Maybe trade Collins for Powell?

Not sure why you have Nolan Ryan on your team. If you didn't grab a couple $10M SPs, then you're best off going with 4 solid ones... all in the $7-8M range. Williams, Leifield...

Also, get a good backup for Wagner. You'll lose him for 20 games on average.

No go on Collins for Powell. I put a couple of other offers out there. I could also drop Collins for a platoon of Mincher/Knight. Any thoughts on that?

My purpose with Ryan was to have a reverse RHP and alternate him with Merritt. I guess I could go cheaper there or even pick up a *, but I like Merritt a lot and would rather have someone alternate with him.

Also, is Evans a good choice here. I could drop him for Buford or Henderson or even a lefty like Henrich or Heathcote. The thing is the parks all seem to be either pitchers parks like Forbes or Lefty dominated like Yankee '56 (4) and a Dunn.

I do not like your chances at all, you are not taking advantage of your BP strength, which is LH HR power. When you face a LH at home, your lineup would be:

May - good
Ripper- hitting RH
Bishop?
Brett - less effective
Wagner - no HR power
Covington - less effective
Lemon - hitting RH
Ennis - hitting RH

Get some balanced LHs if there are any left. Ideas include Cash, Snider, Mathews, Ott, Bailey, Dickey. Kid Speer will give you fits at home.

You SPs look OK, but there are better values out there, Carlton, Sutton, Seaver, Lolich would be good choices. If there are 4 Yankeee 56 teams in the league, McGregor, Key and Gura would also be good gets.

I have Carlton already as my third starter. I was just looking for someone to pair with Merritt in the 4th spot in the rotation. Any thoughts on Shawkey?

N. Cash is available, but he's the only one of those you mentioned. Does it make sense to drop Ripper for Cash?

As the Sportsman's Park team in your division, I say...Bah, humbug. :) :P

Cash for 1b, or Mincher/Roenicke.

Low obp from Roenicke, but a lot of pop in this platoon.

I picked up Cash for 1B and used the extra cash to pick up Walling and Lansford. I know Walling is expensive, but he can back up injury risks for Brett, Cash, and at DH with Covington.

Now my only questions are about Nolan Ryan and a backup for Wagner at SS - Bancroft not available.
