Help a first timer

Your right Rob55! Enos can't be injured at all. I have had teams very much like his and I have led off with Enos. Keller would be a much better leadoff man though. He has two problems that I can see on his team. first is balance. Lotta right handed bats. 2nd, he has some good HR power but if you look at their BA's, NOT OBP, they're not that high. Ruth excluded.Batting Avg will determine WHERE on those cards the HR's are. Thats the problem with Garvey. He hit a lot of dingers but his avg was what, somewhere around .230? All his HR's are on low numbers. My only point is most of my bomber teams have their nucleus centered around a handful of guys with lots of HR's and high batting avg's. The other players will be a mix of High OBP guys and or, defensive players. Almost all of my teams have the same players at certain positions. Parrish at C, Bowa or Concepcion at SS and maybe Doby at CF. Great defense at a low price and Good HR production from Parrish. Usually between 30 and 50...always. OT has some good suggestions. Almost all the guys he mentioned are guys I usually use as backups. That way when a starter goes down, you have somebody cheap with good defense, at least, to replace them. Saying your not going to use backups so why invest $ in them is only a good idea if most of your front line starters can't be injured. Whats killed playoff drives on a lot of my teams is getting to game 145 and then having 1 OR 2 starters go down for 9+ games. Valentine and Campenella are notorious on my teams for that. He DOES need a leadoff hitter. Keller would be better. But when he drops...who does he leadoff with after that? I've used Bando! :roll:

Where to start?

1) There is a difference between not going to play and not wanting them to play.

2)If you are relying on sub $1mill backups who can't catch OR throw to carry your team offensively when a starter gets hurt, I think you are going about this is a wrongheaded manner. Your starters who aren't hurt are going to have to carry THAT load. Just make sure your subs don't give it away in the field.

3) I often (Meusel and Clemente come immediately to mind) use 15 game injury risks and I never spend more than .50 on a sub unless I've got leftover money. It is possible to win with such a setup. :)

Craft, Kennedy, Dahlgren and Hegan...all my usual backups. Good choices OT! 111 wins is impressive with that group. I have to ask out of curiousity, who did you have on your pitching staff?

On the other hand I will spend the money to have a decent back up to anyone who has a 15 game injury risk and two chances instead of one to roll it.

I don't think there is ever an "only" way to do things with Strat.

By the way, I would grab Keller with a backup so that if you have to drop both you can afford Slaughter and a cheapie. Slaughter isn't leadoff material. Keller is. Slaughter does a whole bunch of things reasonably well but not really well. Keller's OBP alone makes him the choice. Personally I think players of Slaughter's ilk are best suited for the sixth hole in the lineup.

I agree. A lot of trial and error. And some luck. I had Yaz, Bench, Gorden, Trammell, Valentine and Doby ALL below .250 BA on one team!
I don't mean to sound like I'm a huge Slaughter fan. OT is right in that he does a lot ok but not great. The only reason I end up with him at leadoff is because I go for the big guns first and he's the only OBP guy left...after Cobb and Keller and Chance and..... :roll:

Keller costs 1M more than Slaughter. Right now I don't have the cash for Keller much less Keller and a good backup so I am going with Enos S for better or worse (probably worse by the sounds of it). Anyway he is a 1 fielder, decent OBP, and can never get hurt. I think I could do worse. With all the sluggers a lineup will be tricky. Here is my first impression of a lineup:
