[quote:e05a84aa4c]I am aware that geekor had outstanding seasons with Lee in the roster, and I concluded that his success was possible only because geekor had a team exceptionally fit outside Lee. In other words, geekor had an exceptional 67M team, so spending 13M on Lee didn't hurt his chances.
If I recall correctly, at least two of geekor's teams were petco or kauffman teams, where cheaper players like Figgins or Taveras fit so well. When you buy cheap players, chances are that you're gonna end up spending only 65M with one spot in the roster left. In my opinion, this is the only scenario where buying for Lee makes sense, because the other options of this scenario, such like dismantling the core of your team in order to increase the payroll, or adding relievers that you really don't need, are less effective, after all, than spending on Lee.
In all other cases, particularly those where teams are built around Lee, spending on Lee is an error, in my opinion. According to my numbers, he's at least 2M overpriced, if not more.[/quote:e05a84aa4c]
Lucky, actually it's because I can't play (my style) without a sold #3 hitter. D Lee outperforms pretty much any other player in a pitchers park environment. There are many many cheap W powered hitter with decent BA (Taveras, Figgins, A Sanchez, F Sanchez, etc etc) that I can always fill in the blanks with them. But the 2 things I was first, are a solid #3 (D Lee) and a good leadoff guy. the rest I can always find replacements for. So I don't build a cheap team and fill up space with Lee, I get Lee, and then get cheapies to go around him ;)
