Can I calculate OPS from the cards?

Can I calculate OPS from the cards?

Postby ANDYCOCHRANE » Thu Nov 17, 2005 8:43 am

How do I go about calculating my players' OPS from their cards? Is it a case of adding together OB chances and TB chances, and dividing by 108? Or am I wrong and totally misguided?

I'd like to know too. Actually I am not happy that they put OPS in the FA list but not on your team stats or player cards.

No.

OPS= on-base + slugging

on-base = OB chances/108

slugging = TB/(108-W chances)

(W chances include Walks AND HBP. If you are using the disk, W chances is obtained by substracting hits from on-base).

Thus, OPS = OB/108 + TB/(108-W)

Don't forget to include BP ratings (in normal stadiums, 8 BP chances is equivalent to 4 OB chances and 16 TB chances) as well as singles.

I also suggest that you modify the formula by the following, which is more accurate:

AdjOPS = 1.2* OB/108 + TB/(108-W)

Finally, you can approximate the effect of clutch ratings in the following way:

AdjOPS+ = 1.2*OB/108 + TB/(108-W) + (clutch)/20

Thanks Lucky (it is you?), A reply from one of the masters. I will take my ratings book to work now and see if I can put that into action. Any queries with it and I will return to ask you for more information.

I don't have the disk, just the 2004 rating book. Doesn't TB exclude walks and HBPs? If it didn't you could not have TB values below OB values, such as Klesko vs RHPs.

Am I missing something here?

In fact I just looked it up in the front of the book. It says:

TB = Total Bases (from hits only)

Another question I wonder about. Do the TB chances include any averaged BP influence? Example:

Konerko's TB chances are -

39.6 vs L
37 vs R

BP chances are 6 vs L, and 5.8 vs R. It is known that Konerko's SLG isn't all that high compared to other 40 HR players. I think because he does not hit many doubles.

So do the TB chances include BP chances at say 50% success? I understand HRs off the ballpark charts, but do 8 BP chances mean you would get 4 HRs if they all occured in 1-10 parks?

Sure it does. But by definition, slugging percentage is a percentage, that is, the result of a number being divided by another number. This other number, the divisor, is the number of at-bats: slg = TB / at-bats. In order to get the right number of AB in 108 chances, you have to count all chances that are either hits or outs--in other words, exclude the walks from the 108 chances.

So what you are missing is that 108 chances is not the same than 108 at-bats (except for players with zero walks).

No. However, the BP chances for Konerko are NOT 6 vs L, and 5.8 vs R. These rather refer to chances of direct homeruns, and are fully included in TB. BP chances are rather the chances of #, like here #10- HOMERUN . Konerko has 8 BP vs lhp and 7BP vs rhp. These are not included in the primary TB furnished by the disk. In average stadium (50% of sucessful homeruns), the 8 BP is equivalent of 4 chances of on-base and 16 chances of tb.

So with a player with 8 BPHR's you add 16 Tb and 4 OB to his OB and TB chances, i.e. 39 OB and 55 TB on card with 8 BPHR = another 16 TB giving total of 71 TB and another 4 OB = 43 OB?
