Do you ever give up on Quiz?

Postby gmac94 » Tue Nov 29, 2005 11:27 am

I'm in early contention in my league but have a pitching weakness facing lefties.

I'm considering shopping (or dropping) Quiz - 5.31 era in 18.2 innings (but with 13 saves and 4 blown saves). I have Bedrosian to close in reserve, he is doing great in a set-up role.

I can get two FAs - Shirley and Flanagan to replace McWilliams and Quiz.

Do you think this will bolster the weakness facing lefties?

And more importantly, would you ever give up on Quiz?

Thanks.

That's the great thing about the 80's. A guy with a low salary is more than capable of doing the job of a player with a significantly higher salary.

In this case, if you are confident Bedrosian has one of his good years, absolutely, Quiz is expendable. I've always thought that Quisenberry was a bit overpriced to begin with...but if you have one of his better years, I suppose he's pretty good. So, the question you have to ask yourself is: How desperate are you to improve you deficiencies vs LH hitters? Can it wait a little longer...so you can give Quiz some more time to either shape up or confirm that he has one of his bad years?

If you cannot wait any longer, then losing Quiz's salary should free up enough cash to get you something good vs LH in return (assuming you're still in within the first 42 games of the season). Just a quick question. Why are you going after two SPs if you are cutting Quiz and McWilliams? Wouldn't you want to replace a RP with a RP? A couple of guys I'd look at, who are usually available, are Mark Davis and Don Robinson. And for SP, I'd also consider Dan Schatzeder and Floyd Bannister.

Quiz

He is absolutely overpriced. Don't get me wrong, he has some great years on his card, but let's face it -- in STRAT he often serves best as a middle man or possible righty specialist. The best closers have the K's and keep that hits-inning rate down. Late in the game, I'd rather give up a WALK (which can score, at best, one run in a bases loaded) than a single (which scores two, natch).

I'd give Bedrock a shot at it, if you're fairly certain of what ya got. And if you are having significant probs against lefties, Quiz is not your guy. Dump the salary to improve the overall quality of your staff (my four and a half cents).

To answer your question, I'll probably use Shirley in the pen vs. lefties.

Between Flanagan and Tanana - who would you choose?

Thx.

Flanagan-Tanana

Tanana has advantages in WHIP and K-rate. He has a mixture of BAL's among his five cards, and you can probably live with most of them. He is also cheaper than Flanagan.

Flanagan is heavily slanted toward lefties, and would do more to improve your performance against them. I would imagine, though, that lineups tend to get stacked against LHP's, so the advantage offered by Flangan may be eliminated, as he can't come in from the pen and shut down LH's.

Both worked in hitter's parks, with Tanana's being more harsh for HR's (what park is yours, btw?).

I'd go with Tanana, simply because I think he's a better value for the money.

Pick 'em, then. My personal preference is Tanana, but only because of K rate.
